Early on in preseason training we use sand sessions to overload the body, particularly the lower extremities. Here Lleyton is being pushed by his good mate Pete Luzcak.
I love using the stairs for Lleytons training. Shorter versions are great at challenging foot speed and the longer versions really challenge cardio conditioning.
Lleyton performs some of his strength exercises. This is important component of pre season training.
We are using strong elastic tubing to add resistance for these exercises, it is a great way to work the body specifically for tennis.
Here Lleyton uses different equipment to work his core muscles, notice the concentration and focus, thats important when working the core muscles
Boxing is a great way for Lleyton to challenge his hand eye coordination, hand speed and functional core strength
Using the tornado ball for these dynamic rotation exercises enables Lleyton to strengthen his core and challenge his fast twitch muscle fibres
Plyometric exercises are great for helping Lleyton to stay exploside and dynamic
Cross training early on in the pre season is a fantastic way to challenge Lleyton including shooting some hoops. Doing various basketball drills challenges his co-ordination and aerobic endurance.
Sand Hills are a great way to boost your fitness. Lleyton has always found the mental battle of sand hill training a great challenge. During tough matches it is good to know he has done the hard work.
For this exercise Lleyton is dragging the pipe through the sand, this is extremely challenging because the pipe is heavy (30kg) plus he has the resistance from the sand against it.
Lleyton is using specially made training pipes, they are filled with sand to make it more challenging as he has to counter balance and stabilise the weight whilst pushing it in the air.

Lleyton has been playing tennis at the top level for over a decade, so keeping his training fresh and giving him variety is important to keep him motivated. Lleyton loves AFL football, so he uses various AFL type drills that are specific for tennis as well. For this drill Lleyton is moving side to side between cones, catching and passing the ball. It challenges his coordination and foot speed at the same time.
