Well the French Open is over but there were alot of positives to come out of my 3 matches at Roland Garros. I arrived at Paris with little expectation and many questions about how the hip would hold up. I still wasn't 100% before the tournament but we were doing everything in our power to try and get it as close as possible, so it would stand up to 5 sets of Grand Slam tennis.
I was surprised how well I was hitting the ball in practise considering that I'd been out of action for a couple of months. I drew Nicholas Mahut from France in the opening round. It was a dangerous match due to his firepower, consistent serve and playing him in his home Grand Slam. I played a very solid first up match and got through it in straight sets, which was a bonus. That win set up a match against the talented Mardy Fish from the USA. It was similar to my first match where my opponent would hit alot of great shots, but I would need to keep at them and make them play heaps of balls. I ended up winning 6/4 6/3 6/2 in an entertaining match that finished at around 9pm that evening. That brought me to my biggest test so far, a showdown with a great claycourter in David Ferrer from Spain. We'd only played once before which I won on grass at Wimbledon. This would be very different being on his favourite surface. I got off to a slow start but found a way to get back into the match and was able to go ahead 2 sets to 1. This turned into a long battle that went deep into the 5th set. I had a chance to go up a break halfway in the 5th set but couldn't convert. I eventually went down 6/4 in the fifth set. It was disappointing to lose in such a close contest but I was able to take alot of things out of the match for the up coming grasscourt season. Over the next week, it's going to be very important to do extensive rehab and strengthening for my hip to try and get through the next month, after which i will then reassess the injury. I'll be starting at the Queen's club tournament in London. It's a special tournament for me as I've had great success there in the past, There is always many great players in the field so it should be perfect preparation for the big one in a couple of weeks time, Wimbledon! I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to those fans who have contacted me through the website to wish me luck both with my injury and for my tennis. And Hi to: Bettyanne, George, Hao, Hayley, Jordan-Lee, Kelsey, Khalid, Leanne, Monique, Sam, Suzie, Tiarna and Tiegan. Cheers |
