Australia is the second most successful nation in Davis Cup. It has reached the final 47 times, winning the title on 28 occasions. Its most recent success came in 2003 when defeating Spain 3-1 in Melbourne.
Lleyton made his debut for Australia in Davis Cup in its centenary year, 1999, winning both his singles against the United States in a quarterfinal in Boston at the site of the first ever Davis Cup. Australia went on to win the Cup that year defeating France in Nice.
Lleyton has won the most singles matches of any Australian in history and is closing in on most Ties played which is currently held by Todd Woodbridge.
This year Australia is in the Asia/Oceania Group 1 and needs to win two matches to make the World Group Qualifying round in September. It will be the first time Lleyton has played in a Tie not in the World Group and he is determined to ensure that Australia win through so that it can again challenge to return to the mainstream of the completion.
